3Worked Ok, until it broke.  Mar 03, 2010
Bought this roof rake after we received record snows in Flagstaff.

Pros:
* Easy to assemble
* Lightweight
* Long enough to reach pretty far back on single story home.

Cons:
* Building this was obviously a tradeoff between sturdiness and lightness. However I think they went too far to make this light. If the extensions are put on it bends and whips around. I'd prefer it if the tube was stiffer, even if that added some weight.
* Strength. After using this for less than an hour one of the cross braces snapped in half. I don't think I was abusing it in any way, I just think they are too thin, or mine had a defect. I'm going to have to jury rig another brace somehow before I can use this gain. Given what these cost, I expected it to be much sturdier.

Overall it did a good job before it broke.

2So-so tool, rude customer service  Feb 18, 2010
I bought one of these, retail, at a local hardware store. The box came without instructions inside. When I attempted to use it the shovel assembly cracked and broke. Turns out the unit was supposed to come with some braces and bolts for them. No braces, no bolts and no instructions that would have explained this. The pictures on the outside box do not clearly show the braces.

When I e-mailed the company for support they offered to send the braces and bolts at no charge. At the same time the response stated:

"I am sorry that the two braces were not in the carton when you purchased the roof rake, however, why would you use an item that is missing parts and not realize that you might do damage to the rest of the unit?"

Gee, had the unit INCLUDED DIRECTIONS or ALL OF ITS PARTS then maybe I'd have had a chance to use it correctly. Just who's running their support department that thinks it's OK to insult a customer like that? Yeesh.

Fortunately the local hardware store is good about their return policies. I returned it. I would have swapped it out but not after getting that kind of response from the factory. No way I'd want to buy another one from a company that lets their support people respond in that manner.

So I'm buying an all-metal Garelick one instead. I've got a number of other Garelick products on our boat and they make reliable products.

I strongly encourage everyone else to AVOID Suncast products.

4You don't need the Gym after using this tool!  Feb 17, 2010
First, let me say the tool works wonderfully. Too good in fact. It bites deep into the snow (even when it has crusted over) and if you're not careful, you could find yourself buried in an avalanche. It is a workout, especially if your house is ranch style and you do everything from the ground. If you don't have upper body strength prior to using this tool, you will after. Note, you should not scrape all the way down to the shingles as this will shorten the shingle's life span. This would happen no matter what tool you used (and I have seen people using metal shovels while standing on the roof. Goodbye roof.) You also need to be aware of what's behind you when all of the handle extensions are in. No sense denting the car when the snow gives way and the shovel comes loose. The tool is pretty indestructible but you can break it if you snag it on a chimney or a gutter and then out of frustration, go postal on it. Lastly, keep the wing nuts hand tight. The tool loses integrity when the parts are loose. Now, my complaint: putting this thing together was not easy. The support struts did not mate flat to the main pole and fitting them took several attempts. READ ALL THE DIRECTIONS FIRST otherwise you'll do what I did and install the button hole upside down. Yes, it does make a difference between the "long side" and the "short side". Wing nut the supports to the main pole first but not competely torqued down. Attach them to the shovel blade, then tighten everything.

5Well-Deserved Praise  Feb 10, 2010
Ice dam issues over the years finally resulted in needing costly roof repairs after last winter. So, as they say "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" (or "better late than never" in my case), I purchased this snow rake after carefully studying my options.

I must say that I'm very pleased so far. Does a great job with hefty depths of snow and once hoisted, is pretty easy to use. You have gravity on your side, so it's actually a lot easier than shoveling. Just hoist it up, pull it along and watch out below, as it can cause quite an avalanche. You can also tilt it on its side afterwards and it does a pretty good job of clearing the residual snow out of the gutters.

Yes, it bows when you use all the extension lengths, but it's still lightweight enough to handle relatively easily. Seems well constructed and durable.

Certainly worthy of well-deserved praise.

5Suncast Rake Works Great  Feb 08, 2010
After reading the reviews of all the snow rakes I selected the Suncast because it was rated more highly than any of the other roof rakes listed. I found the reviews were accurate and I will reiterate a couple of things that are mentioned in many of the reviews. Be sure to hand tighten the wing nuts before each usage, and be prepared for significant bowing in the pole when all extensions are attached. The rake is sturdy and lightweight.

I need the snow rake because one side of the garage roof on our one story home gets little sun, and the design is rather convoluted creating a couple of spots where snow can get stuck, and ice dams will form between the roof and the house. And, although that section of gutter is kept cleaned-out, incredibly long icicles hang from it. Nothing we have tried has helped, so, I ordered this snow rake from amazon in hopes I could remove most of the snow and alleviate the situation before it causes serious damage.

The job is a little awkward because of the bowing pole, but the snow pulls down easily. I cleaned four inches of snow off almost everything I wanted to reach in no more than ten or fifteen minutes. I even managed to get most of the snow out of the gutter.

What surprised me was that even with the rake's fully extended 20 foot length, I couldn't reach the top of the roof on our one story home. Granted our roof is a little higher than usual, but the angle from the ground to the roof is significant enough to lose quite a bit of pole length before ever reaching the roof. So, although I thought twenty feet would be long enough, it wasn't. But, if it had been any longer I don't think I could have successfully maneuvered the rake across the roof. Perhaps a man could handle the job, but this is something I'd like to be able to do myself. I would not hesitate to buy the Suncast snow rake again, it does the job and I recommend it to all.
